LAND BACK
VM. 022
“I grew up in a household full of religious fear and emotional, financial, psychological abuse. I didn't know if I was going to survive to 18. And then when I did, I snuck away with a friend for a weekend. And we drove to Colorado, and for the first time in my life, I breathed air that wasn't choked with fumes and humidity and the disappointment of my family. And it was so freeing.
But of course, that's just for me. That's nothing compared to the millions of indigenous people who have had their homes stolen from them, their children forced into residential schools, and the stewardship of the land that they have taken care of for so long, ripped out from under them. Land back. Because if we don't give the land back, if we don't allow the stewards to do what they need to do, then none of this is going to last.
And the reality is, all we're doing is lining the pockets of people who don't care anymore because they'll be dead by the time there's any real damage to us. And we have an obligation to the future generations, to everybody who's ever come before us, to keep our country wild. And when I say our country, I don't mean a thing that is defined by borders. Because no human is illegal on stolen land. I mean, the earth that belongs to all of us.”
