RECONNECTING WITH OURSELVES

VM. 026

“I visited Joshua Tree as a young child with my school, and it was a life-changing experience to leave the city where a person can drive for hours and not see another person. That was such a revelatory experience that it completely changed my life. The dark skies at night allow an incredible light show, thousands of stars, things we literally don't see in the city because of light pollution.

And without this perspective of a belonging to the earth itself, without human-made interruption, we lose sight of where we came from. And by maintaining the integrity of the landscape, we remember how the natural system works. All of these are lessons from nature that we need to embody as we learn how to harmonize with the natural world, rather than fight against it.

We are here as caretakers and stewards of the land, instead of seeing these resources as material to be capitalized upon. And that's what we need to regain, a connection to the natural world. It's really a connection to ourselves.”
